Close call for me today! Theft close call!

10 years 3 months ago #333771 by Steve Kemp
I stepped in a local mall to get some dress socks and while I was leaving I forgot where I parked my car, so I pressed my cars 'lock' button on the remote so the horn would beep, and just as my head turned in the direction of my horn I noticed someone running in the opposite direction.  I didn't pay attention to this till I got to my car, and the read driver side door was open with all my stuff pulled up onto the rear seat of the car!  Lucky for me the only thing of value other than books was my tripod, which they moved from the floor to the seat as if they meant to take!  Good thing I hit the horn to go off, that could have ended in a few different ways.  My fault, I don't think I locked the door, or if I did, someone found a way to disarm it!

That was lucky that you just happened to hit the button on the remote at the right time. Glad nothing got stolen.

OK, I'll say (type) it:

Why the heck do you have a bunch of stuff of perceived value in your car, in plain sight, in the first place? Most malls and shopping areas have signs clearly posted "encouraging" patrons to hide their belongings (i.e. where they can't be seen at all) and ensure that their car is locked. Put your things in the trunk, carry them with you, or don't put them in the vehicle, period. Clean your car out when you get home. The thieves don't know if you have anything of value, just that it's easy pickings.

I'm glad that you didn't lose anything.  But, really:  What Gary said....

Yeah, I know bone head move.  I was in a rush and wasn't thinking... clearly seeing that I'm not even sure I locked my doors!  I have a lot on my mind, but need to pay attention.  Sharing this hoping others don't do the same.

You were lucky here!  I bet you will make sure your doors are locked next time.

This is why I don't own a car... or anything of value.

This is why I drive a beater. And my truck does look totally beat. Thieves look at my truck, and then see other vehicles, and ignore my truck. I have people telling me I need a new truck, but then I tell them that I would beat it up anyhow, so why bother. If anything a thief would leave me a dollar or two in pity.
My truck, and it looks even worse now.

It's an easy mistake that so many of us have done ourselves.  So glad you hit that horn when you did.  Also glad you didn't walk up to the guy and meet him face to face.  Who knows what could  have happened then.

Oh my gosh that's so scary! I'm glad it worked out for you though. I usually put things either under a coat/blanket or in the trunk of the car depending on value.

Mark this off as one of those lucky moments that become a learning lesson in life.
