Suggestions for a 'starter' dslr camera

9 years 6 months ago #406412 by moparfamily
I am thinking about upgrading my point and shoot to a DSLR camera. I can spend up to $800.00 or so. Any suggestions for a good introductory camera and lens? I want something that I can take photos of my dogs, and my grand sons. We also ride quads  do a lot of desert rides, and camp. I am not very tech savvy, so need something my brain can handle...but would like to be able to have the choice to adjust settings and get some good nature shots from far away. Thanks for any help.

Those "far away" shots will be the tricky part.  For a DSLR that means an additional lens, telephoto zoom.  You can find these cameras in combo deals with both the normal 18-55 zoom and a telephoto, but they will be closeouts, or other deals on cameras that are kind of plain.  Which may be just the ticket?  If you can hold out, add the telephoto sometime down the road, then there are a number of nice DSLR available for $800.  The other way to get lots of telephoto is with a SLR-like superzoom point-and-shoot, which is not really a DSLR.  Links for lots of views -

Firstly go for a SLR camera with a crop sensor which is cheaper than full sensor. Then I'll go for the cheapest body/kit lens package and rather spend my money on a good telephoto lens. Second hand lenses are still good quality and get you further for your buck. If you are thinking of wildlife, at least a lens 300mm or even rather 400mm at the zoomed end.

You do not indicate your location, but one option is looking at used equipment. Figure out your compromise points and work from there. For Nikon, consider a used D90 or D300. You can buy a body alone, and skip the kit lens, too. For Nikon, as a starter, consider the 18-200, also used.
