When shooting in manual mode is not a viable option...

Which mode is your go to mode?  Aperture priority or Program mode?

I guess if you are going to use Auto, which method is preferred?  I have found that I don't always have the time to frame up shots and set correct exposure.  Personally for me, I use Aperture mode.  I'm just curious if others will use this or Program mode the most?

Well I still pretty much use manual mode all of the time. You have to remember until I got the D50 I was shooting with a Pentax MX, the only thing the battery was for was the meter. So with my D300 now I can change the settings really fast with the wheels. I tried Aperture Mode but I found that it over exposed the shots. Since then it is M only. Coming from old school I do not consider manual to be manual at all.

I use Program mostly for daylight scenes and TTL flash.  Aperture for closeups and the street.  Shutter priority for low light and action shots.  Manual is limited to the studio for me.  That is with my DSLR.  With my mirrorless camera I will often just select a Scene setting instead of using Program mode.

Like Dennis, I'm old school ... from when manual everything was the only mode.  So it's easy for me.  And I really can't think of a situation where it's not a "viable option."  But I do use aperture priority mode often ... if I think the camera will get it right.  If the lighting is the least bit tricky, though, I'll meter different areas, figure it out, and shoot in M.

Manual is always an option. If my camera is in hand, I've already checked out the lighting to get my settings in the ballpark. Then it's a quick tweak to improve the exposure and off I go.
