Photography only schools for high school graduate

9 years 5 days ago #436080 by Cathy Kadolph
My brothers son is graduating this year from high school and wants to pursue a degree in photography.  He was asking my opinion on schools.  I only know Hallmark and Brooks.  Are there any other reputable photography only accredited schools that offer degrees?

Depends on what he's looking for. Those schools (Hallmark and Brooks) are accredited as technical or occupational (vocational) schools. Usually those degrees are two year associate degrees or one year certificates. A bachelor's degree from one of those schools seems like it would be basically meaningless.

The university near me (that is accredited thru a higher learning commission to issue bachelor's and masters degrees) has photography as one of their few mandatory dual majors (with business as the other recommended major). A degree in photography would usually be thru a university's art dept. or journalism (media/communications) dept.

I'd suggest he talk to a school counselor to make sure any school he's considering is accredited to issue degrees and what kind. There was one in my area that has since closed most of their branches across the US, the U of Phoenix; from what I read they lost federal funding because their credit hours weren't accepted in transfer by legit universities and their students were graduating with only a low percentage of them being able to find jobs (more apparently meaningless so-called 'degrees').

This link shows the occupational outlook from the US Labor Dept. http://www.bls.gov/ooh/media-and-communication/photographers

Photography seems to be mostly freelance work now so he might need to pair it with another degree and should get recommendations from his school and do plenty of research.

A degree from a school would be pretty much meaningless in this field. He needs to work with a working pro for the experience it would afford him. Business/marketing courses would help with setting up a studio. Hard field to break into... I took mail order classes decades ago. Didn't help one iota...
