Sigma good cheaper alternative for Canon?

While on a phone call with B&H and building my new wish list that I will be picking up in a couple weeks.  I was telling the sales rep, my budget and what I would like to get.  The new body that I hope to pick up in 2 to 3 weeks is a Canon 5D Mark III.  The sales rep told me about another brand called Sigma, and it was a cheaper lens company than buying Canon.  My friend has a Canon and he's saying to stick with Canon lenses.  I wanted to get more opinions on this.  Has anyone heard of Sigma and using it on Canon DSLR?  Is it a good or bad lens company to use?

Ted, as with so may things it depends. More recent Sigma models are very competitive with similar canon products at a reasonable price. Older items can really be poor. Do some research on the specific lens you are considering. If you are going to go in for a high end camera then you really will need to pair it with high quality lenses. I

I'm happy with the Sigma I got for my 50D, but I have not checked into Sigmas for the full frame bodies.

Sigma 35 1.4 Art lens is the best 35 1.4 in the world.

The NEW 50 1.4 Art lens will probably be good too.

The 50-500 and even the 150-500 has a good rep. But I'd be more tempted by the newer TAMRON 150-600 myself.

Basically the new range and the 85 1.4 are good lenses. Sigma have upped their game a LOT lately and are bringing out some of the best lenses you can get.
