Best photo storage?

9 years 2 months ago #423690 by Jessy Page
Morning, just more of a checkup than a full blown question.  I've been using external hard drives that work just fine.  I was just wondering if there was other ways that other photographers were using to back up their photos?

RAID1 NAS devices on my desk. Currently 4TB of space. And I have a portable 2TB drive for making a copy of the important one (LR backups) to take offsite. I need an additional solution, however; this isn't enough.

This may be helpful if you are going with an internal or external solution,  https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive/
Personally I can vouch for the high failure rate of the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 series.

External hard drives is all I use. I put my processed keepers, or works in progress on two late model HDs, and update them every year or so. Seems redundant, but I lost a drive once and it sucked! I probably have some things saved in four different places now....

Why so serious?

I use a 2TB Western Digital external hard drive to store my photos and video. It's dependable, small and portable. WD has a great line of storage solutions. Check them out here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1290

That said, any piece of hardware you keep on your desk, or in your house, or in your camera bag, is not really the ideal data storage solution. A theft or a fire could take it all out. It's OK for the sake of convenience, but the ideal solution is to back the data up automatically on a dependable cloud service, even if you're using an external hard drive.

My wife and I own a web development & hosting company, celebrating our 20th year in business. We can't afford to risk our files to happenstance, so did in-depth research into the various backup services available, and settled on Carbonite. Carbonite automatically backs up every file, including the files on my WD. If my WD were to be lost or stolen, I will still have all of my work, plus all of my photography-related files on my PC.

Carbonite might be overkill if you're only looking for cloud storage, though, so you might want to check out the key players in that market: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413556,00.asp

The best would be a removable Solid State Drive. Then you toss it in a fireproof safe, and bring it out when you need to backup. Since the SSDs have no moving parts there are not prone to mechanical failure, as are standard drives.
