Hi

I'm brand new to DSLR. My wonderful sister sent me her back up camera and a few lens to get me started. It is a Canon 50D. It works great in Auto mode but will not work in any other mode. Shutter doesn't actuate. Do you think the issue is the shutter or main board?

PLease advise

Thank you

After a quick google, the first question may be, is the mirror locked up? There's a menu item for that.

Nikons release the mirror when you turn the camera off. At least, mine does. That's good design.

Strange.  When my 50D works in Auto, it also works in the other modes.  Note that a 50D can be set to not fire when either the AE or the AF fails to make its setting.  Gotta dig down into the menus to clear that one.  But if you are shooting in decent light, all the modes should work Ok.

I don't know Canon but if it were Nikon, my first thought would be that the autofocus priority is set to "focus" rather than "release."  With that setting, if the in-focus indicator isn't displayed, the shutter will not release.  It's a menu item under Custom Settings > Autofocus.  Perhaps Canon has something similar?
