Photoshop CS5 - Opening JPEGs in RAW

I have not tried it yet, but I read that using Photoshop you can open JPEGS in RAW for processing. Is there much advantage to doing this as opposed to regular processing in Photoshop CS5 ?

That's how I do it ( I always shoot RAW, but I do get the occasional JPEG to edit), and it seems clearly better to me, although you are still working with an 8-bit file. Adjustments are more accurate, and you have the opportunity to open as a smart object, which gives you a lot of latitude in your editing. Give it a try!

Adobe Camera Raw is the same processing tools as Lightroom. The ACR/LR processing engine is a collection of the most commonly used non-destructive photo processing tools and techniques compiled into an easy to use interface. Beyond that the main advantage is how it handles non-destructive processing. You don't have to worry about it at all. I shoot raw, but if I shot jpegs I'd still do most of my processing in ACR/LR.

Just to confirm, you aren't talking about opening a JPG in RAW format are you? Meaning a photo that was taken as a JPG and converting it to a RAW file?

You can't convert a jpeg to raw. You can process a jpeg in the raw converter, you'll just be working on a smaller, 8 bit file.... ;)

Why so serious?

You are simply opening up a jpg in the Camera Raw dialog box by either doing so in Mini Bridge or when opening up a jpg in Photoshop you go file > open > and then select Camera Raw from the format dialog drop down. There you will have all the sliders and options available to you that you would when working with RAW files. Beware that you cannot go anywhere near as far with a jpg as you could with a RAW file. Hope this helps! :)
