As a rule of thumb, when you are printing a

Landscape
Portrait
Black and white

do you print on matte, luster or gloss paper?

Depends on the mood or style for the picture.  Not the subject.

:agree:  What he said.

That said, if you want to be safe, glossy for everything.

You should do a test yourself and gauge your personal liking's.  Print one of your photos in each of those papers, then see what floats your boat.

To many things to consider.  Sometimes I like a flat look for a photo, and other times it's gloss.

Also depends on how much reflection you want if it is framed under glass.

Pretty much the same for me, actually I'm all over the place when it comes to printing.  As some of the others said, it depends on the print.

Majority of my landscapes are printed on a satin or semi-gloss. Color portraits are generally done on the same. Majority of my black and white is printed on super glossy but a few require the satin or semi gloss for the correct look. It's rare but on occasion an image requires matte to look good. Generally these would be Black and white. It depends on the image, which paper to choose.

Lately I really enjoy my landscapes on matte finish.  Now granted this was all high gloss for me for example last year.  Its just artistic preference.

And then there are the metal papers, fabrics, and so on.
