Non-destructive way to add noise in post?

9 years 6 months ago #404683 by Wild Mitch
What is the best way to non-destructively add noise into a photo that looks realistic?  I have tried adding noise from Photoshop and it always looks fake.  I'm guessing there is a sequence of steps that I need to practice or simply another way.  Regardless any help would be great.  I'm trying to make a photo look vintage if you want to know why I want to add noise.

Thanks for the help!

You say that like it's a good thing. :pinch:

There are tutorials for adding film grain in photoshop. You don't want to add noise per se. Google for it.

And for what it's worth, there's a lot more to aging an image than adding grain to it. Old prints from film look that way for a number of reasons, not just the flaw of film grain. (Yes, it's a flaw, a limitation, which some have developed an irrational preference for.)

I like the film grains in some genres. As Gary said google it for adding grain. I only add noise when I have cloned out something, and it appears smoother than the rest of the shot. Then I have it isolated, and add just enough to match up the rest of the area. I lasso anyhow to clone, and match. I also work at 200+ percent when I am doing it.
