How does the HDR processing engine in Photoshop compare to dedicated software like Photomatix?  Is there any legit comparison?

Two completely different animals.  Photomatix and other dedicated programs like this will have more depth and options

For the money, and assuming you do enough HDR processing, Photomatix is the way to go.

Yeah, HDR on skin is a trick.  Go to YouTube, there are a few other good video's on Photomatix and processing HDR

Own both and when you want to do hard core HDR, there is no substitute for Photomatix.  As for everything else, Photoshop is the best.

I have both of these programs and will say Photoshop is much easier to use and learn.  However you get more control over the tone mapping process IMO with Photomatix
