Sunset in Wheat Field

9 years 9 months ago #390128 by JeremyS
This shot I took the weekend of the supermoon, it was rather lucky as I was searching for a photo of the moon with the background of my farm house, however the bugs ate me alive so I left early.

It got featured on the local news in a small daily photo feature.

Let me know what you think, and how you think it could be improved. I'm always learning as you probably know!

Could use a longer telephoto . . . and less exposure

What Kelly said -- but I will add something: I like the composition...

Agreed with less exposure. What would a longer telephoto do for the photo? Thanks for your Critique, It always helps for me to get better shots. I'll give another shot with less exposure and put my tele on and see what happens next time.

A longer focal length will give you more separation between your foreground subject and the background. It will also flatten out your foreground.

In this image I think all of the cat tails (?) tend to overwhelm. Since it doesn't look like you can isolate any one of them it might be more interesting to focus on them as a whole, to provide a sense of place.  That sunset then provides a backdrop rather than a distraction.

But: it all depends upon what you're trying to do. This is the kind of situation that warrants trying lots of different things t find something that translates well to a captured image. IMO.

This type of "landscape" is essentially abstract, which usually comes with lots of experimentation.  Good thing digital "film" is free!

Thanks Tuscan, Gary and Kelly.

Thanks for all of your tips, I'll definitely have to get out soon and experiment some more with that photo. Hopefully the farmer doesn't mow down his field any time soon *whistles like I'm not involved* and next weekend I'll get out and give it a go with some of your tips!

I like it, but I would like to see what it looks like from a lower perspective (angled up!)
