Long exposure help needed

11 years 2 months ago #271633 by Papabear63
Ok I need some help from all of you, i have done night time long exposures before with some good results. over the weekend i just tried my first long exposure at sunrise with terrible results. The sky was totally all blown out, i adjusted the ISO, Shutter speed, white balance and same results. I've attached a blown out shot and the next frame i took after dropping the idea. as you canb see in the picture it was dark enough out so i shouldnt have blown skies. any help will be surely appreciated, this is really frustrating trying to figure this out :toocrazy:

The dynamic range of that lightingsituation exceeds anything you might guess. I think a very strong neutral density filter would be the way to tame those extreme highlights, and to use ACR sliders to bring back shadow detail in PP.

Hard to say without detailed info on how you metered the scene, plus the EXIF for the photos. Links to more thoughts -

I note you didn't write "Aperture" there. Stop down... and perhaps you need an ND filter despite the darkness of the scene (depending on how long you had the shutter open for). Also, I assume you were using the lowest ISO possible...

White balance isn't going to affect exposure.

Hey Adrian, i'm sorry I forgot to mention i did try adjusting the aperture and i did have an ND filter, on both lenses i have tried that morning. I even tried shortening the time i left the shutter open hoping that would give me better results. Yeah i had my ISO set at 100. this does bother me not understanding where i screwed this up at.

Were you metering in evaluative or spot ? Spot metering the lightest and darkest areas then averaging the exposure would be a good place to start.

Hey John,
thanks for the info, I was using a B&W ND filter 0.3 2X on both lenses i was using. I tried bring it in lightroom and it really didn't help much. i will try ACR later to see what i can get out of it.

Hey Rob,
i was using evaluative metering if i remember correctly. that is the only thing i can say i did not try changing for a better result.
It was a 2 hour drive to get out there, needless to say i was not too happy about what was happening.

ACR won't do much more than LR in this situation.

Your ND filter isn't enough, I think. You probably want something on the order of 2, 4 or higher.

Out of curiosity, what did the EXIF data look like for the two? There could be a hint in there somewhere.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Then next time I'd try around 1/8 sec. What did your meter tell you it should be?
