As for performance and how well they work, good luck. I haven't tried any of the high end BDs, but my Flashpoint does not cast an even light pattern. And I expect that would be the case for the other affordable BDs. The main distinguishing characteristic is that the light fallout is pretty well defined, just the opposite of a softbox. But you can also achieve sharp falloff with a deep "bullet" reflector, or with a circular gobo. So a BD is kind of a luxury. As often as not I use mine with a sock, which really reduces it to a smallish softbox.
So have fun with a DIY BD, at least you should eventually hit on the right components to give the light distribution that you were hoping for.
