Hi bit of a newbie here and definate newbie with a ring flash but i got a cheap one to play with, it is a flash not an always on led light and this was one of my first photo's.

It's had a bit of tweaking in lightroom, please let me know what you think.

Colorful Butterfly. My nit would be that the background is too distracting.... What aperture did you use?.... I have several ring/point lights but have recently started using a small 6" X 8" softbox mounted on my speedlight. Less specular highlights on shiny insects than my ringlights

Thanks for the comments Scott, i agree the background isn't the best but sometimes we have little control over such things outside of cloning stuff out in photoshop or similar, unfortunately my photoshop skills are very basic at the moment, but i am learning :). As to your question i iused f9 to try and get some depth of field to keep as much of the subject in focus as possible, the downside, as you pointed out, is the background is less blurred and as such less attractive.

Does your ring flash have variable power settings?.... I typically shoot at ISO 200, F16 & 1/200th with my unit at 1/4 to 1/2 power. I can stop the lens down to F22 or F32 & blacken out the background but still get the correct exposure on my subject.... Look at my Flickr stream for some examples...When shooting with an additional light source, the aperture controls the amount of additional ambient light falling on the scene... Keep your ISO low to avoid excess noise

LOL I need to get a ring flash!  Granted the lower left is a little distracting, it's a great shot.

Ok so i have taken onboard the tips Scott mentioned and have to say i like the results, here are a couple of examples. All these were taken at F16, ISO100 and 1/200s. At the moment i am levint the flash set to TTL but i will experiment more as i get more experienced :).
