Nice focus & depth of field but I would have moved the flower a little more up in the frame.  Having the one petal falling out of the frame takes away from the photo...  I can't help but wonder if a different angle would have worked here as well...

Needs more contrast.

Unless it is supposed to be high key.  In that case it needs more Clarity (in Lightroom speak).

Thanks for the critique and the warm welcome. I agree with you about the petal and the angle. I had planned in going out to shoot similar shots but the weather hasn't cooperated and blooms on this particular tree are dying.

Please feel free to play around with the image. I don't have Lightroom or Aperture. I do have Photoshop Elements 9 and Digital Photo Professional. I am still trying to master my post processing skills

My quick edit.  Just needed more punch.

For some reason I feel like I never no where to draw the line when it comes to post processing.

It's not easy, but I try to not dwell on the same image for a long time in post.  Either switch to another image after a while, or simply take a nice break.  The more hours I pour into an image, the more likely it is to go off the rails.

The line is where you want it to be.  That's the beauty of digital: you can try all kinds of things to see what speaks to you.

Here's your image from LR3 with the sharpening masked a bit and pushed.

Here's that image, but with luminance pushed all the way up. Notice what it does to the areas of color.

Put the luminance back to 0, and add some basic processing: added clarity and vibrance, deepen the blacks, add contrast.

And finally, take that, but move the clarity to the left to soften the image.

None of these is intended to suggest "this is how you should process the image", just ideas to show you what could be done. Personally, i like #2, give the colors and shapes in the image.

I find it helpful to push an effect until I can clearly see it, then back off. I also switch between "with" and "without"  a lot to help me decide how far to go.

Don't be afraid to experiment. Don't be afraid to have fun.

The time of day can influence the lighting in your original image, this looks like it may have been midday and flat lighting, dawn or sunset are great times to shoot, this means less work in photoshop or Lightroom

It was a flat sky and about 9:30 or so in the morning. Hope to get out early tomorrow and get some shots in before the predicted rain storms.

i think you can improve your framing and the quality of your light.
Also, you might want to try some more angles for better perspective.

Here's my edit.

:kmonst:  First I cropped out some of the pointless background.

I boosted the brightness/contrast/vibrance/saturation a little.  Then used a masked-overlayed-inverted-strong-highpass filter to soften the background.

Edits are really helpful tool to enhance a shot. However, sometimes, when overtly done, it steals the "naturalness" of the shot.
