How to make a background blurred with just a point and shoot.

Hello everyone. First of all, I love this site. I am new to photography and definitely an amateur. I just bought myself a Nikon - Coolpix L830 . It is only a point and shoot, but has a 34x optical zoom. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to achieve pictures with the blurred background. I am trying to learn about aperture and iso, etc. I have heard  two theories: Zoom all the way in and try to move far away from the object, or zoom all the way out and stand close to the object. I don't think I can adjust the aperture on my camera. The manual is simply a set up guide....doesn't explain the settings very well. Does anyone know of a good "layman's" book I can use as a reference?  Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for your help.

As far as I can tell, that camera fits the bill to be considered a "point n shoot" camera. Typically point and shoot cameras have a much higher aperture value, which makes it much much harder to achieve the blur you are talking about, the best method for you to do, from what I understand so far, is to try and widen the aperture (smaller numbers) by setting the camera to manual if possible. Another method is adding blur in post processing. Hope that this helps slightly. Someone else may have more expertise than I do.
