New Nikon D810 or Used Nikon D3s?

9 years 6 months ago #400050 by MYoung
Nikon D3s prices have come down so much, especially after the D4 had come out.  I have been looking at prices on KEH.com, craigslist, and ebay for some time now.  I'm getting very close.  I understand both of these have some very different features, with the most notable being the sensor.  I shoot weddings, portraits and occasional landscapes.  With all that in mind, which of these two cameras would you pick up if prices were close to the same?

D810 no doubt in my mind.

The ONLY reason to get a D3s over the D810 is the fps and if you need a pro body (tougher)  (or if 40MB files would bother you a lot. Keepingin mind that the D3s files are about 25MB).

So basically if you're doing sports and don't need the high MP count, then the D3s is better, for everything else the D810 will be better.  That said, you can definitely do sports with the D810 (or D800/e) it's ONLY the fps that's limiting really.

Some articles I wrote comparing the two (well the D3s and the D800, but you can safely assume the ideas are similar):

Depends on what you shoot, but I'd generally choose the 3s over the 810 and I have owned both. Currently I shoot two D4 and one 810 bodies.
