Nikon camera sensors made by Sony

Have forum, will ask

I have a Nikon D700, and have been drooling over the the new Nikon D810 and was reading that Sony makes these and many other Nikon sensors.  I might be off, but isn't Nikon and Sony competitors?  Why would Sony provide their competitor with sensors?  Something doesn't add up here.

Its not news that Sony makes most if not all sensors for Nikon. Does that make that D700 any less a fine body?

Why so serious?

Well they also used to supply Canon with sensors as well. It is purely business. While the sensors may be the same, how each company writes the firmware to resolve the image makes a major difference. Also despite Sony being very large they have divisions that are not doing all the great, so selling the sensors to other manufacturers makes sense.
I had read that Nikon was considering at one time to make their own, but that the cost was prohibitive. That could change at anytime, much like anything else in life. Nikon is doing what it needs to increase its bottom line, and so is Sony.

There are many companies that would be considered "competitors", that also act as OEMs. This is not news, and not unusual in many, many industries.

A camera is more than its sensor. It is the overall package including the sensor, as Nikon shows.
