Effectiveness of using lens hoods on wide angle lens like Nikon 14-24mm

I'm not questioning the so much the purpose of the lens hood in general, just on this one lens.  From a protection standpoint, or any other; unlike other lenses where you have a more pronounced lens hood.  This one doesn't seem to offer much of either.  So why even bother?

I agree that the 'shade' value of the lens on a wide angle is usually pretty small.  Might offer a little lens protection.

I shoot sans lens hood all the time, but keep in the back of my mind when doing some photos when the sun is up. I don't see the hood offering much protection on the heavy, aspherical 14-24 though....

Why so serious?

the 14-24mm has a built in lens hood.

I use my hoods for the sole reason that I've often found flare in images after the fact, which is always a downer on things. With the 14-24, I specifically look for flare popping up in my viewfinder.

Seriously very little at that too.
