Well I don't have any experience with Capture NX2. But I would really recommend a program like Lightroom or Aperture which will act as an digital asset manager as well as a non-destructive RAW photo editor.

Unfortunately both Apple and Adobe dropped support for the PowerPC a while ago, so you would have to go back to the version 2 line for either program.

I would check out LR2 or Aperture2. When they were new, you could download and evaluate them for 30 days for free. You may still be able to do that.

Now that I've made the switch from 35mm to digital, I need a recommendation for a RAW processing program. I have a G5 Mac PowerPC, OSX 10.4.11. I shoot with a Nikon D-80. Photoshop CS3 is out of my budget range for now, so any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Any opinions on Nikon's Capture NX2?

My favorite prime is my Nikkor 105mm micro as I can use it for closeups and regular shots. For a zoom, I am right now loving my Sigma 10-20mm wide angle.

I have the Nikkor 18-200mm, 3.5-5.6 DX, and shoot mainly landscapes, I think this lens is perfect for my prime lens, used for 90% of my work/fun, perfect for relatively close work and the telephoto length is ideal for most situations, and price I believe is excellent value for money.

If your using a D lens.
If the aperture ring isnt set to the smallest, it will give you the error.

Check your lens. We had the same issue occur and it was as simple as this little switch being accidentally moved into the opposite position when taking the lens on and off the camera. As tiny as it is, it went un-noticed and we switched cameras until the end of the shoot where we could inspect everything closely.

Not sure about the message but when taking out the battery you might try taking out the SD card as well. Also I know on my D80 one of the rear buttons got pushed in and stuck which caused that. Check all of the lever sets for AF and metering and so on and make sure they are not stuck in between.

Well I have never had the problem with my D300 but maybe you can try heating it with a hot airgun while it is open and reforming it in the close position till it cools. You have to be careful with those guns though and not heat it too much in one spot. Also wear gloves.

You know the left side of the camera, that rubber cover for all the ports? Mine won't stay closed? I can tuck it in and in a few minutes it pops out. It's warped from heat or something? What can I do here?

I have a 50 1.4 Nikon. I use it for small group photography when I don't want the inadvertent wide angle distortion of the 24-70 zoom. I find that I tend to zoom instead of backing up.

Make sure your battery is fully charged.

One sure fire way to see if it is a lens/contact issue is to fire it off without a lens attached (in a clean area). If that works, then it could be the lens itself, or the contacts. Same with the memory card (if you have it set to allow shooting without a card, I'm a canon girl, so this may be different). Watch and listen to see what happens. If there is a hum and then the Error, then get ready to send it off to be fixed (after trying a fresh battery). If it fires and then gives the error watch to see what the mirror and shutter are doing. Try a long exposure with no lens to see if you shutter is acting as it should. Hope you can figure it out and get back to taking pictures soon.

Tried taking out the memory card, give it a wipe and reinserting? I had that problem with mine once or twice, also ensure that the contacts between ur lens and camera are clean and do the sensor clean through the camera menu. Think it more likely to be the contacts.

I'm not sure what is going on, but my D90 is showing "err" on the top display. I've removed the battery and turned the camera on and off a few times and no change. I have removed the lens and remounted and still not change.

Anyone have an idea of what else I should check?

I'm still shooting with just a D90 (waiting on the D600 to come out) and know these are two completely different lenses with two completely different purposes. I want to get into more portraits and also landscape photography nearly equally.

I used to use my 50 f1.8D all the time, but now it has been replaced with my 28-80 f2.8. I will eventually get around to mounting back up and shooting some more but for now, I'll just keep using it as a macro lol.

I use mine for newborn photography a lot (small, closeup, portrait) and indoor low light situations because it's the largest aperture lens I have. But I feel it's rather limited for a lot of other uses, so I use a zoom with a wider angle for more general shots. If I had a 1.4 vs a 1.8, I'm sure I would use the 1.4 more. Sounds like you should go ahead and sell it. Won't get huge bucks for it, but enough to fill up a gas tank for sure. And someone out there I'm sure would love to have it.

"Nikon Inc. is asking your cooperation in connection with a voluntary recall of certain lot numbers of its Nikon Model EN-EL15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack can experience a short circuit causing it to overheat and possibly causing the outside casing to become deformed, posing a potential hazard to consumers. There have only been seven (7) confirmed reports of incidents of the problem worldwide, and while no injuries have taken place, Nikon Inc. has initiated this recall of the affected lot numbers as a reflection of its commitment to safety and product quality. We are asking that owners of the affected battery pack return them to Nikon Inc. for a free replacement.

The Nikon EN-EL15 battery pack is provided as a supplied accessory with the purchase of Nikon’s digital SLR D800, D800E, D7000 cameras and the Nikon 1 V1 advanced camera with interchangeable lens. It is also sold separately at retail under Nikon’s model number 27011. The EN-EL15 battery pack involved in this recall was first distributed by Nikon in March 2012 and is still being sold at retail.

This voluntary recall is limited only to those units of the Model EN-EL15 in lots E and F.

To determine whether a battery pack is in lots E and F and among those being recalled, first confirm that “EN-EL15” is written on the name plate on side of the battery pack, as shown on the photo below. To return and receive your new EN-EL15 battery pack, click here or call toll free 1-800-645-6687. Nikon will then send a UPS courier to the address provided, bringing a new EN-EL15 replacement battery at the same time. At this time, UPS will collect the recalled battery for safe return to Nikon. Your EN-EL15 battery pack will be replaced free of charge within approximately 7-10 days of our receipt of your request for a new EN-EL15 battery pack.

I use a D300 with a Tokina 12-24mm f4 for interior real estate work. The 17-55mm will work for exteriors.

f9 will reverse the direction of your dials. f12 just reverses the indicators. fyi.

Can't think of anything that would skip the stops between 8" and 30". I have a feeling something like exposure compensation + exposure fine tune or something.

I'd probably just reset the entire thing, assuming you haven't changed many settings from default.

As others have said, working with DX lenses is the big thing. (the biggest by far)

However, there is also news out there that you can move from 4fps to 5fps through the crop mode.

Also, file-size reduction -- even when using full frame lenses -- can be a large benefit in certain situations. If you are telephoto-limited and need to crop everything, for example. Or if you are a photojournalist on a deadline, etc, etc..

I should note though -- forcing FX mode on a DX lense often results in some cool images. The 10.5 fisheye, for instance, becomes fully circular at that point.

I have an opportunity to pick up this lens for $200 and was just seeing if anyone has any experience with this lens and is it worthy to add to the collection.

Here is a good technical explanation of ISO which includes the effects of using Lo settings.

The only reason I can think of for using Lo settings is if I wish to use a specific aperture and shutter speed combination (perhaps to achieve a specific depth of field or motion blur) but the available light is still too bright to allow that combo. Reducing the ISO can compensate for this, although I would prefer to still work in native ISO and use a neutral density filter instead.
