Portrait Shooting

For all the portrait photographers out there, I have a question. Do you shoot in manual or do you prefer auto mood?

I never ever ever shoot in auto mode, however I do use auto white balance almost all the time and I rely on autofocus with the use of a select single focus point. People think I'm dumb for shooting in full Manual mode, rather than just going to aperture priority (especially considering aperture is quite a priority in portraits), but I tend to overexpose and I like having control over the shutter speed rather than using exposure compensation.

I never, never use auto no matter what I shoot, as Leilance I sometimes use auto white balance..

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

When shooting portraits, I find I have to work with whatever mood the client is in, so I suppose that's "auto mood." If I can get them to relax, converse, and be comfortable, well, perhaps that's more "manual mood."

Oh, wait. You meant "mode."

Anyway....

I turn to auto mode when I hand the camera to my point-and-shoot-loving wife. Gotta get her trained. Me, I only use manual. I control the aperture, shutter speed and ISO, because I might want something different than what the camera wants. As Leilanee mentions above, over-exposing has some utility, it turns out.

I used Auto mode once ... on April 28, 2012. That was the day I got my first digital camera. First and last time. ;)

Shoot in manual that way you have all control.then you shoot it the way you want it to come out.

True story, this last weekend I was shooting and must have accidedentally turned the mode dial. When I looked down and saw "A", I thought, "Oh, I forgot this HAS auto!"
Personally I like A/V (at this point) with the use of exposure compensation.
