Creativity drained and photographers block has set in

10 years 4 months ago #319185 by Casey T
I've been photographing and working on my portraits for some time now and recently started getting a little bored with my results and double guessing my creative side. I was telling my husband just last night that I need to either try something new or I fear I'm going to keep going backwards. There are some days I have noticed I have no drive to pick up my camera and even try. This is because my results I thing are so status quo and really don't jump out to me. He was telling me I should get out in a photography meetup group or go attend a photography workshop or something that will get me surrounded with other photographers.

When times get tough and you are feeling this way, how are you getting up and getting a boost in your spirit and creativity?

My Passion is being behind my camera and my family.

Well this can happen with anything you do in life. But what I do is I still carry my camera with no intent on shooting anything, then I just take my time and watch life go by, how the light plays on things, and sometimes, or almost always a shot comes up. The thing is you need to get rid of the idea that you need to shoot if you have your camera, this releases your mind to see things much differently. Well it works for me at least. I do not shoot portraits, but I know I would get bored with them, so maybe you need to get out and do some fun shooting, or just ramble around looking for interesting things about you.

Joves gives fine advice, as well as your husband. People are inspired in different ways, of course. I try something different, or buy some new gear.... :)

Why so serious?

Ha, I hardly ever have the drive to pick up my camera. Sometimes if it wasn't for paid work I'd do nothing at all. Occasionally though I'll go out and take some street photos or something.

Most of the time I use my phone for photos these days. HA!

Two thoughts:
1) if you are not taking classes to expand your skills, you are missing a huge opportunity. I find learning from other to be very inspirational, but that may just be me.
2) are you taking time to take pictures for you? I can't tell, based on your post, whether everything you do is for clients or for you.

If you are feeling stagnant, what do you need to do to raise the bar for yourself? That's the question to answer, I think.

I think making a routine to get out and meet others in the photography field also impact your creativity. When you don't feed yourself any inspiration from others, you are sitting with empty hands. Read books and look at others galleries. These are a few things that I personally do to keep ideas flowing.
