Order prints from online or print your work at home?

My printer crapped out on me and as I ask this question here, I'm reminded about a question that comes up in my house often: Eat out, or cook something at home!  ha ha ha

As I decide if or what I want to invest into a new printer, I'm wonder should I at all.  Seems lately I have been ordering more and more of my prints from online and my printer was collecting dust.  Perhaps that's why it crapped on me :nunu: .  Really though, do you find yourself printing more at home or ordering from online company?

I print at home for myself, and sometimes when I am giving as a gift. Now for business I would be using online resources to do it. I have yet justified to myself buying a large printer, or a totally professional one. I actually like watching my prints come out of the machine. To me the sounds, and it slowing revealing itself is kind of soothing.

Depends on the size and how many.  Even it's a size that my printer could handle, if the quantity was higher, I would have online shop deal with it.  I do like dealing with online services for clients too, because I don't need to worry about shipping the prints to client myself.

Anything bigger than 19 x 13, or a specialty paper print will be sent out for printing. I agree with Joves about the "seeing" it come off the printer, in my case it could be a lingering thing as I used to process and print in my own lab back in the film days....;)

Why so serious?

I would love to own an Epson 3880 so that I could produce 16"x24" prints at home. But that will have to wait, as a set of ink for it runs about $500. So it would have to pay for itself in sales, and I'm just beginning to move into that area.

I like the idea of labs that can give me press print, metalized paper, canvas, whatever. Much easier and cheaper than trying to figure out how to deal with different media at home.

Most of the time, I print at home.  When I do need something special, I'll order from online

For my photos under 13x19" I print myself, unless I need high numbers.  All client photos I send to mpix.com.  If I need anything larger than 13x19, I send to mpix.

Quality printers are way out of my budget. If I printed more of my work it might be worth the investment, but I only print maybe 5-10 pictures a year and the rest remain digital. With those numbers it's just not worth it. So I think the question becomes a numbers game, really, unless it's worth spending more money on a nice printer to print at home just so you can have that "home cooked" (lolol) feeling. Otherwise, consider how much you print and go based on price.

I've been eye balling a couple Epsons on ebay right now, I will be so happy to have a big printer soon!

Same here, if for clients I outsource to online printing company.  My own stuff, assuming it's the right size, I do myself.

My Canon i560 hasn't completely crapped out, but I can see that day is not far away, and I'm fed up with high ink prices anyways.

Ran an abbreviated trial by a few online printers.  Got the best Pearl results from ProDPI, and very nice glossies from WHCC.  Both outfits have a minimum order of $12, which they may or may not enforce.  I have little interest in the baseline Lustres, or textures, so I did not make those comparisons.

ProDPI shipped from Colorado and WHCC from Minnesota and Texas.  I am in Arizona, dunno if either outfit has other locations.

Print everything from home, 13x19 Canon. Out at trials, I print everything up to 8 1/2x11 on a iP100 Canon. Never had even one complaint. Anything bigger than 13x19, my nephew has a big Epson 24" printer. I suspect it's cheaper to send them out but not that much. I can't hear my printer's run but I do like watching the print come out!
