Photographing the lava in Hawaii

10 years 1 month ago #350557 by Happy Hour
Anyone know if you need to be in a tour or if anyone can walk up to the lava spots in Hawaii to photograph it?  Where are the best places to photograph?  (Which island?)

A Hawaiian tourism website might have that info. I know for gear, you probably won't need a macro lens.....;)

Why so serious?

Hawaii is built on lava, I'm sure getting close can't be that hard.  I would still connect with someone that knows the area to play it safe.  Plus you get to the good locations.

That photo can't be real!  :silly:

Hi, I live on Oahu. :) The only island with an active lava flow is Hawaii aka "The Big Island." you can't get really close to it and you really shouldn't because you can break through a tube and fall into a lava flow on accident. Don't do that please. :) I suggest going with a tour company. I'm planning a trip out to the big island in a couple of months so I don't have a tour company recommendation yet, but if I decide to go with one instead of watching from afar, I'll have tips in a few months time.

I've never been to the island of Hawaii, but I travel a lot.  Here's some resources that might help.

Official Hawaii Tourism website: GoHawaii
WikiTravel: Hawaii
Fodor's: Hawaii

They should have all the info about the Big Island and lava flows and all that fun stuff.

It's obviously a really crazy picture, but can you tell it's photoshopped by looking?  Or do you know the story behind the picture?  Or are you just calling photoshop based on how insane it is?

Oh I sooo envy you!  I did a paper on Oahu Tree Snails in my simple introductory ecology course but it made me want to run over to Oahu and get photos of them before they reach complete extinction
