Speaking of mirrorless cameras...

What was the purpose behind mirrorless cameras existing?  Was it primarily the reduction of shake because of no mirror?  I'm not trying to be sarcastic.  I'm rather fond of a couple of these cameras.  I'm just wondering what was the engineers main reason for inventing this kind of camera?

Mirrors take up space. Mirrorless cameras can be smaller.

Leica have been making interchangeable lens "mirrorless cameras" for a while.

Most people mean EVIL cameras when they say mirrorless though.

SN is right, the first SLRs came along in the mid-20th Century.  So all cameras before that were technically "mirrorless".  But the marketing label "mirrorless" started with the introduction of the Micro4/3 cameras by Olympus and Panasonic in 2008.

How does a dslr with mirror-up compare to mirrorless?

Pretty much the same.  Except, if the mirrorless body has a viewfinder, you can still use that viewfinder.  Locking the mirror up with a conventional DSLR forces you to use the Liveview LCD.

My first camera had no mirror.  Therefore, it was one of the earliest mirrorless models. ;)

I don't remember when it was made.  Let's just say it's older than dirt.

Anyone else think it's rather silly to name a product based on something that it does not have?

I guess they didn't want to use E.V.I.L.

The earliest camera was the Camera Obscura. It had no mirror...
