If your photos are just viewed on monitor, does high MP matter?

I heard rumor that Sony might be releasing a 56mp camera this year.  I thought Canon had a 46mp in the works and who knows that Nikon has up their sleeves.  But at what does this stop making sense.  If your photos are being viewed on your monitor only and not printed,  are high MP numbers pretty much a waste?

Canon 7D, 15-85mm, 18-55mm, 70-200mm, 100mm Macro, Sigma 120-300mm, Speedlite 430EX II

A bad day at the race track is better than a good day in the office

If the image in question were to be a heavily cropped version, then maybe. Otherwise probably not. Its for each to decide on their own needs....or more importantly desires......:)

Why so serious?

Here we go again the hurrr durrz you wants the bagillion MPs. If you are viewing it on a monitor, then what is being made is adequate. Even on a very large monitor. The larger the monitor the further your viewing distance is supposed to be, to be viewed properly. It is the same as very large prints as well. Really large prints look like hell when you get up really close to. Get up on a billboard sometime, what looks like a picture no longer does when you are next to it, all you see if very large dots.

At what point is does this become just a waste?  But then again the camera companies need an angle to sell cameras!

It may become a waste at some extreme point. However, compare a medium format to 35mm to APS-C and it's clear that larger sensors with lots of pixels can assist in producing wonderfully detailed images. Cramming more pixels into the same geometrical area is a part of that; there are clearly other components to that equation.

It seems that for DSLR's, the "sweet point" is about 18-20MP. Beyond that, the pixels or so small that it follows the law of diminishing returns.  That will change as the technology changes but right now, most of the MP race is for hype.
As Kelly says, "That's my 2 cents worth".

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Baydream is that just for monitors?  Or does that apply to print too?

That's what I thought, MP is good for when you are printing larger prints.
