Hummingbird feeders

If you want to photograph hummingbirds, is it as simple as putting out a hummingbird feeder and they will come?

Get them up early, and have plants growing that they like also. Lots of info here......

I see by your profile that you are in Ga. They are all over hell there. So yes putting out a feeder will bring them to you. Your best time for shooting is early in the morning. Also you want to color the water with food coloring. I find yellow, and red work the best. After you get them coming regularly you can ditch the coloring. Also when you first put it up, find a nice place to sit, and let them get used to you being there, and they will. This way they will not fly off as long as you do not make real fast moves. And remember to try and set it in a place where you can get the light coming from the back, if not you need to use a flash.

You guys are so helpful, thank you.  You mind me asking if any feeders work better than others?

I've had good luck with a simple feeder, with red flowers. (Yellow also attracts hornets and bees)....;)

Yeah I have the generic feeder as well. I think mine cost a whole $5 at Big Lots.

The color of the feeders is enough to attract them. Adding food color to the nector (sugar and water boiled then cooled) is harmful to the birds. It weakens their bones.
The feeder should be near trees where they can perch between "sips". Shoot fast because they are quick.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
