Legal or not legal? Photography marketing question

10 years 2 days ago #361861 by Freshstart
I put my business card on 59 cars in the crack where the cars driver side window meets the rubber seal this past weekend.  I got my first call back, but it's not the call back that I was hoping for.  They chewed me out and said what I was doing was illegal, and that I could go to jail for putting business cards on peoples cars.  Is this true?

No, you won't be jailed, but maybe its not the best "marketing strategy"....

Why so serious?

Okay, thank you Effron for jumping onto this topic, I was scared for a moment!  I always get others putting business cards and post cards on my car, so I thought this was okay business practice.

Not illegal, but many would consider annoying.  Then think about how many of those are just getting dropped on the ground.

Canon 7D, 15-85mm, 18-55mm, 70-200mm, 100mm Macro, Sigma 120-300mm, Speedlite 430EX II

A bad day at the race track is better than a good day in the office

It's more than annoying.  It is a trespass.  The car is another's personal property and you have no right to do anything to it without the property owner's consent.  Google "trespass to chattel."

Any trespass is actionable but, without some damages, that's not likely to happen.  It won't land you in jail.

Honestly, I get annoyed when I come back to my car and find marketing stuffed in a crack or under my windshield.  I would never buy from a company that choose this for marketing, just saying.

Yeah I have to agree with everyone so far. It is just plain annoying, and will get you more animosity than potential customers.

Not illegal, but something I wouldn't expect many pro's would be doing to stir up business.

Yeah, that's not marketing, that's just annoying. Putting flyers / etc on windshields is not going to find you your ideal client.

I can't stand finding stuff on my car, I won't say where those flyers end up

I think you might have gotten your answer, but if not, let me add another vote for... don't do this sort of marketing.  ;)
