Tim Dordeck wrote: Have you thought about buying used? If so, you can upgrade body and most likely get a lens or two and still be under budget. Especially if you sell your D90. Sell your D90 for $400 to $500, buy a used D700 and you should have enough for some glass still.

Well it's not in the budget so will wait till it's replaced and check in again. I about had myself sole on the D7000 and B&H has it as a referb for $612! I have had really great luck with reberb equip. Didn't the D7000 replace the D700? Might be worth looking into. Don't think I'd buy used as inexpensively as a referb can be had!
Joves wrote: Personally if I had that kind of money saved for new gear, I would be getting a D800, since it is $2800 at B&H right now. You can use your DX glass on it without a major Image Quality hit due to the amount of pixels it still has in DX mode. And it is just a good body that will serve you well for a longtime. Or you can go with the D610 to go full frame @ $1900, and maybe get a used lens from them, or KEH, or save it for more glass, or get an extra battery. Again because of the pixel count you will not suffer in DX mode. For me it would be the 800, this mainly because of Nikon increasing the pixel count, and therefore making the newer FF bodies acceptable in DX mode. That and you can switch them into DX if you choose even with an FX lens mounted.
