Backup solution when traveling with out a computer?

9 years 10 months ago #381928 by Kelly Lambert
We are heading to Europe in August and I don't want to bring my clunky 15" laptop with me, but want to make sure I can some how back up photos while there.  My husband was suggesting I buy a cheap 10" laptop or what ever the smallest one is.

Can I ask what you use when traveling to back up your photos?

There are some backup systems where you simply put the memory card into the hard drive and it automatically transfers them all to the hard drive.

They can be found here:  www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Stand-Alone-D...ci/3369/N/4000227848

hope that helps some :)

You know what would be cool?  Having your camera talk to your cell phone to transmit your photos to your Dropbox or other online storage.

You can essentially do that at any internet cafe with your card reader.
To the OP if you have your own photo site then upload them to it. That is if they allow you to save your RAW images, if you shoot in RAW. It is either that, or you buy some additional high capacity cards, and just fill them up. Cards are cheap now. Just make sure they are stored securely where you remember where they are at. I hate it when I forget where I put something myself, at times. I usually find that I lost something where I put it.

I have just bought a 13.1" Toshiba Chromebook for that very purpose. Much lighter than a laptop, 8+ hours battery life and several external ports, including HDMI out. Storage is limited, but I upload to Chromebook and then send to Google Drive. Being a bit of a 'belt and braces' person I also have a small 100GB portable disk drive as well!

I used to use a backup storage devices, but they are expensive (especially if they have a small LCD for viewing.  Now, I just carry lots of memory cards in GEPE Extreme cases.  For a two week trip, I usually carry 200-240GBs.

I got a 11" macbook air and I load the image to dropbox folder and let it sync from the hotel room.

Now I have some options to consider.  Jones - to upload to my site would require computer and ideally that is what I'm looking to skip bringing if possible.  I like the idea about extra cards, but I would be concerned that I would leave one somewhere and lose it!  I think the storage device might make a nice investment for me.

Thank you all!

My Canon 70D has wifi capabilities that talk to my phone (both for control and photo view. I use a 32GB card in my phone.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

To the OP,

For a very portable backup device, I recommend the Sanho HyperDrive. This is what I use when we go for vacation. Another thing I like about it is that I could recover images that I've accidentally deleted from the memory card.

Most of the time, I have my laptop with me.  But I also always have multiple cards with me too.
