Accepting payments from clients: Square vs PayPal?

9 years 9 months ago #382732 by Joan Barnes
I'm looking for what is most accepted and comfortable payment method when using an iPhone.   Have any of you tried both and then decided on using just one?  Which would you recommend?

Thank you for dropping off your opinion!

Have not tried paypal as a vendor (hate it as a payer) but the cost of using the Square is VERY reasonable and both partied don't have to be PP members. I believe PP is 2.9% + 0.30 and Square is 2.7%.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Does Square charge any transaction fee's like PP?  Although I'm sure I can find that out on their site.  I was curious from a reliability stand point/ease of processing, which was better IYO?

:thx2:

That would be incorrect. PayPal swipes are 2.7%, manual entry is 3.5% + $0.15. The 2.9% number is for merchant services. But mobile, it's the same as Square. And both parties (when swiping) do _not_ have to be PP customers. They are exactly the same solution.

You will get different opinions about Square. I've heard complaints about their reader crapping out quickly, and I've heard from very happy people. I am using a PayPal reader and am perfectly happy.

If the fees are a problem, inflate your prices to compensate. That is no different than any other business that accepts credit cards.

I do not understand why people dislike using PayPal to make payments. How is it different than using a credit card?

I use PayPal and have been happy with the service.  I don't know much about Square to make an opinion.

I second the PayPal reader solution.

Same CC swipe fees and if the customer wants to pay from their PayPal balance, we can do a transfer with no fee.

If I was using Square for CC swipes, I'd still have PayPal for other payments like workshop fees on my website so it's less hassle for me to have just one vendor.

That said, my wife uses Square for sales at craft expos and it works just fine. She doesn't do any online sales.

Cheers,
Gregg

I haven't looked into Square although I know someone that uses it for sales at craft shows. Did you look at their website to see what options they offer?

I used Paypal for years (but not as a vendor) but my problem with them was wanting me to sign up for their MasterCard or allow access to my checking account. I didn't find their reason acceptable that they needed to verify me thru a credit card application since I've had the account for over 10 years and have been at the same address and used the same bank for even longer than that.

Authorize.net for us.
Customers never leave our website to pay and are never asked to sign in to another system. You need to do this through a bank merchant services. It is then very easy for us to set up monthly subscriptions etc. with just a couple of button clicks. Several of the free ecommerce solutions already include authorize.net as a payment module.

I've been using Paypal for a number of years.  Although I don't care for some of their practices (rates), they are a reliable company to work with.
