Let's discuss the future of photography filters and digital filters

So an old timer and I had a discuss about this yesterday that I found to be interesting.  In my camera bag I only have: polarizer, and .3, .6., .9 and 10 stop ND filters.  This seasoned photographer I ran into had at least 20 filters in his camera bag.  What started out as a discussion of available space in our camera bags, turned into discussion about the future of photographic filters.  I carry what I do (polarizer and ND filters) because you can't duplicate their effects in post.  The old timer, lets call him "Bob", stated that soon, as photographers, we won't need to worry about any screw on filters, that companies like Adobe will give us ability to duplicate their effects in post.  I disagreed because, how can you duplicate the effects of a 10 stop for example (milky water and clouds)?  Better yet a reflection removed from a water surface opening up a whole new image due to a polarized filter.  See what I mean?  Some cases perhaps it could work, but many cases, it won't.

The person with whom you were speaking is mistaken; there are plenty of threads on here discussing various types of filters.

Colored filters were useful for film; not so much digital. You are correct about a polarizer, and (graduated) NDs can be gotten around by talking mulitple exposures and combining in post. NDs are useful when you need a longer shutter speed and there's too much light. Can't fix that in post, either.

<snark>I so enjoy when folks opine without facts.</snark>

Seasoned old timers tend to be wise, and even now, if you can't catch it, you can fake it. Already the camp of 'purists' is aging and shrinking, and being replaced...

Reminds me of those who said synthesizers will never replace real instruments... Have they?

Yes and no.

Will PhotoSHOP replace photoGRAPHY?

Yes and no... Like smart phones have erased eye contact...

(screw on filters??? - that's sooooo last year ;) )

The only way filters could be replaced digitally is if the sensor filter did it itself. In post processing nope. Now granted you can do various shots by settings, and then stacking the images for effect. But there are times when you cannot do that also, or even come close to what the filter does.

Almost anything is possible, a lot of that would be improbable......

Why so serious?

There are many filter that are redundant today (Star burst & Soft focus are two that I am glad to see dead) especially the coloured filters for Daylight/tungsten however as you say somethings need to be sorted at the time of capture and I find it hard to see that we will stop using these filters...But Never say Never!!!
