How to recover corrupted SD memory card?

9 years 8 months ago #391043 by neal1977
I need some help please.  My Sandisk 16GB SD card is nearly full of images and I'm unable to access the photos.  When I plug card into computer, it says card needs to be formatted.  If I plug into camera, it says the same thing.  I have done some searches and tried out datarescue.com but that didn't work.

I'm open for new ideas please.  Thank you

There is software that can recover data from damaged or corrupted disks/cards.  Here is a review of some paid versions .  I've used PhotoRescue in the past to recover photos from corrupted cards.  There are also some free products around but I'm not familiar with them.  Whether or not you can recover images depends on the nature of the disk corruption.  I was able to recover about 95% of the images when it happened to me.

I should add, do NOT format the card.  You can only recover data if it has not been overwritten or the card reformatted.

There are several YouTube videos covering this topic. If you haven't done so already, try a search for your specific card type. Also there are numerous professional data recovery companies who charge a fee but since the images are valuable to you, it may be worth it. Good luck!!

First of all, do not easily format your Sandisk 16GB SD card, unless you have recovered the lost pictures. Depending on your specific situation, I recommend the following steps to recover the lost data:
1) Try other picture recovery tools. In general, most of the data recovery tools can recover lost images from a normal SD card. However, to recovery data from a corrupted memory card is much more difficult. You have to try as many data recovery tools as possible.
2) If there is no data recovery tool that can recover lost files, I’m afraid you need to seek help from a professional data recovery company. However, professional data recovery services can be very expensive (typically a few hundred dollars). If you do not want to look for expensive data recovery services, then you can try the third step.
3) Formatting the memory card, then let the professional picture recovery tool to rescan your memory card. Generally, it can get back most of the missing pictures.Good luck to you!

Anything made by man will screw up at some point. It could be a few things such as a bad sector, or two, or even if the card was not formatted in the camera prior to use can sometimes screw up the file tables. That last is not likely but can be one of the many problems.
To Neal. You might try going to Sandisk's site, and finding their recovery tool. I have yet to have to use the disc that came with any of my cards. Thankfully. Contrary to popular belief you can format it, and still recover the data, but it makes the task more difficult, When you format all it really does is cleans the allocation tables, so that new data can be cleanly written over the old. The only way that it is not recoverable is if you write data over the old. But again formatting is not the plan. Also did you format in camera prior to using it? Also not that it should matter, did you accidentally lock the card? I hate SDs because of that little slider lock on them. When I had my D50, and D80 I have accidentally locked myself out. Good luck.

Hello! I am sorry to hear that you alsolose your important camera memory card data. Honesty, about a month ago, I did
get similar formatted memory card photo loss problems and found most of them
were needed in next day. So, without knowing much about data recovery information,
I also followed some data recovery suggestions online and took chances with
some memory card format recovery software. Luckily, after trying several ones
of them, I eventually had recovered many useful photos back.
So, if you also need such helps still, myexperiences may also help you:
