How would you set up lighting for this?

We have camping trip starting this upcoming weekend.  There will be camp fires and everyone sitting around one.  I want to take photos of rich orange camp fire, but well light people sitting around it.  I'll be shooting in RAW so post will be easier.  What I'm wondering is setting up lighting.  I'll have 2 flashes with me, should I use a defuser or better yet a warm gel to make sure the tones on the people don't get washed out from the flash?

Well I would just bump up my ISO to 800, or 1600. You could use a flash though bouncing off a gold reflector as well. I have shot campfire photos with ISO 400 film back in the day. The gel will work as well, the big thing is setting the power output, and distancing the flash so it is subtle, if that is what you are looking for. If you have an orange gel that would closely match the fire glow when shooting in the Daytime WB.

Another way to use your flash is to illuminate the background, instead of zapping the people at the fire.
