Need some advice on a group portrait of 27 people

Our family is cutting back cost, which includes our yearly family get together where a professional photographer is usually hired to take our family portrait.  This year, seeing that I have the camera, I have been asked to take the photo.  There are 27 people, of which, 8 are kids.  The challenge is:  it will be shot indoors at my sisters home and also, I have just one flash.  Her house isn't super bright, so I'm a little concerned on how I'm going to be able to do this.

I would really be grateful for some assistance on this shot and suggested setup please.

I don't know what camera or lens you have but will suggest 100% put your camera on a tripod to start.  How big is the room?  Most likely you are going to have to stop down the lens to keep everyone sharp.   You'll want to get the camera as far away from the group for this to prevent perspective distortion.  I would use a longer lens too, longest one that will allow you to get everyone in a single frame.  Depending on time of day, I would get all available light in the room on.  Hope this helps.

Do you have a large white or silver reflector?  I would bounce light off that at your group.  Test a few shots and positions to see what covers the most.

BTW all this helped, I also ended up buying some 2 Pocket Wizards and 2 used flashes off a Craigslist seller.
