What I don't get is how did this tiny drone "possibly damaging the prized geothermal feature"?

"The moron who crashed this one has not been prosecuted.".....Maybe a little lifetime ban from ALL national parks, and a bill for any damages and clean up would send the right message?

Why so serious?

It isn't allowed to fly UAVs over some if not all of the National Parks but I don't know what the penalty is for doing so. Apparently it isn't known if it might have caused damage or if they'll need to try to recover it.

I don't know if any research has been done to indicate what could happen with a geyser if objects would be dropped into it or not.

I've seen reports of incidents including a drone flying over a race and hitting a runner causing head injuries, one coming close to landing in the middle of a busy highway, another interfering with an air care chopper trying to land to get to an injured person. And since they record video and use GPS in at least one case they were able to track the owner to his front door.

It's legal to fly one as a hobby but the person operating it has to keep it in sight. It's currently not legal for commercial use, and the FAA is supposed to be developing new guidelines.

:agree:  but then you need to get that "message" out to all others that might be attempting the same.  I suspect we'll see more laws coming out soon regarding drones and where these can be flown

Oh yes, there will be some laws coming.  Another example of a few people ruining it for others who are using common sense.

That's one perspective. Another is that just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Flying cameras around, willy-nilly, is just unwise, but some folks don't understand boundaries.

The geyser pools are extremely hot, so batteries would leach their contents for a long time. I am willing to bet this is what they are talking about. Also it was pretty much undisturbed prior to that, it is the same as dumping garbage into it.

When I was a much younger pup, I worked for the Forest Service, and I can tell you stupid is everywhere. We had a guy almost kill some people at a campground cutting down an 80 foot Ponderosa pine. When asked why he did it, he said that he, and his kids had never seen a really big tree fall. Later I was told that he was jailed, and fined $1000 for each ring in that stump. The tree had 120 rings, which made me laugh about how much his little show cost him. I hope his kids were really happy for that price.

Well, stupid is as stupid does, right?

Geez. At least, sometimes, there is justice.
