Lens element repair for 70-200mm lens

9 years 8 months ago #396704 by Ben Vanderbilt
Would anyone happen to know a reliable 3rd party that repairs lenses?  I have a 70-200mm Nikon VR I lens that was accidentally dropped and the front element is cracked.  This lens is of course out of any sort of warranty (wouldn't have been covered anyway), so I would like to see if it can be repaired and if so how much.  If the cost is low enough, I'll have the lens repaired, if it high, then I'll just scrap it and get a new VRII.

Thank you

Ben

I'd be curious on what they charge to fix that.  I don't have any problems, but just wondering.  I'm going to guess $300-$350.

I'm going to guess about the same.

I believe that KEH also does lens repair. So you might want to contact them to see if this is the case. And I must ask have you tried shooting with it since the mishap? Here is my favorite lens rentals blog on cracks. www.lensrentals.com/blog/2008/10/front-element-scratches

Hey thanks everyone.  These are some good options, I'm going to start calling up tomorrow.  Hope this doesn't cost too much to repair.

I got hit directly in the 70-200mm by a Football a couple of weeks ago and the repair quote was around AU$950 but most of the parts where the rubber grips and other items that I assume are ruined when they disassemble the lens. This lens has had a pretty hard life so I think this will be an insurance claim.

Well, that has me thinking it's time for a new VRII then, I've been looking for a good excuse to buy the newer one any way!  lol

The cost to repair is nearly what you can buy a used one here.

:agree:   if the repair cost was $900 range, I would just buy a new one and be done with hit.  Sell that one Craiglist for $300 bucks.  "As is", and disclose the damage on it.
