Is there a way to set up a D700 to emulate a film camera?

9 years 8 months ago #397245 by James Rados
Might be a crazy question, but hey... it's a Friday and I'm going to ask.  I love digital, but also love the look of film.  Thought it would be fun to experiment with this.  Anyone been about to change some settings that allowed their D700 to emulate a film camera?

Thank you

It isn't the camera that will give you the "film" look. It's Post Processing. There is software designed for that p[urpose

Digital just does not capture the image in the same way & the processor in the camera does not have the power to apply these effects well....Leave it for post production.

You ask that like it would be a good thing...

OK, enough snark.  +1 on the above comments. It takes post processing to generate the look.

<edit>Man, I'm having trouble with the thinking-and-typing-at-the-same-time thing...</edit>

Tape over the LCD, only shoot 36 shots on each card, pay someone to print them for you without looking at what you've got.

If you want to try and get the film look in post, the best is probably alien skin exposure:
www.alienskin.com/exposure/

If you want black and white film look, the best is Nik Silver Efex:
www.google.com/nikcollection/products/silver-efex-pro/

Nik also have Analog Efex Pro which does a similar thing to Alienskin Exposure:

But why?  Do that in post, if you ever want to edit another way you are not limited too one way.

I shoot film, much of what is supposed to look like film often doesn't. It looks more like some old pictures that have been in a box in somebody's basement for years! lol Seriously it looks more like snapshots taken with an instamatic etc. It doesn't look like good quality film photos but seems to perpetuate a misconception. I'd save your money on the software, I use my digital camera in a similar way that I do my film cameras; I don't really think there's a way to get your digital camera to produce the same quality as film as I think it can have a different look (prints anyway) but can be comparable in being good quality.

With the D700 no there was no way to do that, as far as I know. With the D300 there is the D2x Mode where you can load a bunch of settings that have been hosted forever on this one site. The only ones that ever had the correct look, and it is more a case of the saturation over anything else, was the Vevia one. But then I can do that easily with the saturation in my Vivid Picture Control. But getting it as shot will not work if you want that film look out of the camera.
