Thoughts on battery grip: Yes or No

9 years 7 months ago #397832 by Chris Curran
Those that have a battery grip, do you use it enough to classify as a good investment?  I'm more of an outdoor shooter (D700) mostly.  Any major advantage from Nikon grips to 3rd party ones?

I use one (third party) when I use the D7100 to shoot an event, to avoid a possible change at an awkward moment. It works very well, and costs a fraction of the Nikon one. Worth it at the price. I find it isn't needed when I use the D3s.

Thank you.  You mind me asking what brand you went with?

I bought a Flashpoint grip for my D90 when I was shooting a lot of sports. The 2nd battery meant shooting without worrying about battery drain. In an 8 hour - 2000 shot event, I would change a battery one time. The only problem I had was with contact not being perfect inside the camera's battery well with the contacts on the grip. Seemed to be a common problem even with the Nikon grip. S little 1/2" by 2" strip of cardboard from a notebook cover placed in between the grip and camera fixed the problem. I've used my grip for 4 years without a single problem since.

LOL that's because the D3s has a built in grip. :silly:

Yes! I have a battery grip on my D7000 and on my D3200. Great not to have to worry about battery life and they give the added bonus of a better hold on the camera.

Sorry, but the box just has "Battery Grip", and I can't find a manufacturer's name. I got it on ebay, from a seller from Hong Kong, I believe. It cost about $60. It works fine, but it is kind of flimsy. I use it on a tripod , usually with a 70-200 f/2.8, which is what is attached to the tripod. If I had to give it heavy and frequent use, I'd probably spring for the (overpriced) Nikon grip.

Grips are good for when you want that extended battery life.  I have one and although I don't use it often, when I do.  It's handy to have.

Battery grips are great! They not only give you better battery life but I think they make the camera look better and I personally like the added weight.

I don't have one currently but have owned in the past.  They are nice when you want to shoot vertical shots, not so nice for the extra bulk.   Extra battery life is nice too.
