Getting hard stops with a variable ND filter

Is there any way to get a variable ND filter to have hard stops between different levels of ND?

I don't see how this could be done.

You'll need to go with the fixed ND filters for that 3, 6, 9 stops

Then it wouldn't be called a "variable" ND filter any longer ;)

I tried one of these and what I don't like with the variable ND filters is that you get this weird "X" shades through our your image.

It could be done electronically, but I've not see one for sale that was designed like that.  www.smarttint.com/

I am guessing you want something that clicks into the stops. To my knowledge they do not make one, and most likely it would increase the cost enough that they would hardly sell. We they might but they would require a lot more work. The only way you will get what you are looking for is by using your cameras meter, and then stop rotating it when you hit your desired stop down. Otherwise you are just out of luck. I do not think even Singhray has this either, and if anyone would have a filter with a stop lock, it would be them. But then again look at what they get for their variable NDs.

A cheap one, perhaps. Not all of them.

Speaking of variable ND filters, which are you all using?

I have an inexpensive Opteka which suffers from an X and purple tint at the far end (8 stops). But it was inexpensive, and it's not something I use much, so that's OK with me.

I have a Tiffen, okay at medium HD, but at the maximum power it does some weird stuff. Of course, it worked much better when a certain moron remembered to close or cover the viewfinder during a longer exposure........
I haven't used it since getting the Lee system including the Big Stopper. (recommended).......;)

Why so serious?

I've heard this about the lesser priced ones, which is supposed to work the best?
