Increasing the battery life in your camera

Might be a dumb question, but I'm going for it any way.  I hate carry extra stuff with me.  Is there any way to increase the life of a cameras battery?

Um....

Because batteries are so bulky?

Not without violating the laws of physics, I think.

You provide neither information about your camera nor the type of battery under discussion. It's real difficult to make any really useful comment without knowing more. The EN-EL14 in my Nikon D5100 is good for over 600 shots; I think I've made 800 before. A spare easily fits in my backpack, or in my pocket along with an extra memory card. Please forgive me for not really "getting" this.

I figured it was a longshot answer regardless.  But I do have a D7000.  My wife jokes with me constantly, I don't like anything in my pockets, this even includes car keys.   As me how many times I have lost my car keys?

The two things I've learned will drain the battery on my T3i faster are turning it on and off often (sensor cleaning and boot up both use power)  and using Live View with the  LCD. Let the camera sleep on its own if you're going to be out shooting and use the viewfinder more than the LCD.

That said, both my Canon battery and the aftermarket battery yield hundreds of shots in any situation. I'm in agreement with Gary on carrying a spare. I always have my bag with me and keep a charged spare in an outside pocket. Since Li-ion batteries don't have memory effect issues, you can "top off" the charge on either battery as soon as you get the opportunity, too.

I have to agree with the other posts. The only true way to extend it is to take it out when not shooting, but then you will have to carry it in your pocket. I carry a spare with me most of the time.

Yeah, well, you just took this in another direction that we really can't help you with.

I will say now: use a camera bag, and deal with it.

Doesn't keeping a battery warm make it last longer?

In colder situations yes.  But you aren't getting hours of extra found juice from it.
