Question about international flights and travel

9 years 6 months ago #406408 by Sandy Smith Photos
I have a trip to Europe coming up and my camera bag weighs a ton.  I'll be doing a job over there which is why I'll be bringing all my gear with me.  I have 2 layovers each way, and when I'm there I'll be doing some serious walking.  During this time I'll need to have my gear with me.

So, my question is kind of two fold:

1. What bag would you personally use in a case like this when you have 2 camera bodies and 7 lenses, 3 flashes and other misc items?
2.  Would you store any of it below the plane to reduce how much you are lugging around in the airports?
3.  If you know you are going to be doing a lot of walking around and some mild climbing.  Would that change what bag you are using for a trip like this?

Lowepro has a roller that is small enough for overhead storage and should hold most of your gear.

Canon 7D w/grip, Canon 40D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 70-300mm f2.8; Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6

+1. I use the largest Billingham to carry a similar kit, and I pack in my checked luggage a Messenger style bag, flattened by deconstructing the interior, which I use when out and about, and not in need of "everything". I usually manage one of the bodies and 4 lenses in it, with various other necessities stowed wherever available or dangling from D-rings. Let me emphatically discourage you from putting ANY of your equipment in your checked luggage!!!!!!

Have you thought about a backpack?   There are some large ones that are pretty comfortable too.

The above recommendations are good, whatever suits you. I would add in my case, I would leave any gear at home I couldn't keep in my immediate possession at all times. NEVER check anything you want to keep. Baggage handlers were politicians in their former lives, or in training....

Why so serious?

Nothing of value should go below the plane.  It's as simple as that.  If you are concerned about weight, I would pick up the largest rolling bag that is OK for overhead storage.  Bring what you can fit into there.
