How to photograph granite counter tops?

9 years 6 months ago #406611 by Glen Mosley
I've been hired to photograph different granite counter tops for a kitchen counter top company and I met with them on Friday, and over the weekend was looking at some of my 'scout' photos I took when given the tour of the place.  None of my shots turned out good.  They all have heavy reflection and show little clear detail on the color and pattern of the granite.  Now granted these were all quick snap and go shots during the tour.  I thought some might give some clues of what I'm up against.

Any of you have some suggestions on how I can do this?

I guess some level of reflection could even be desirable. Have you tried side lighting?

I would experiment with lighting and polarizing filters.  Linky -

Yeah I pretty much agree with the CP for the shoot. The big thing will be getting the angle right to cancel out the reflections. If possible you could setup a darkening sheet to interrupt the light from the ends, or whichever direction it is coming from. Granted you want light always but if you can somehow get rid of excess lightthen you could control it better. Then there is using screening to allow the light through, but dampening it to some extent. The shiny surfaces will still pick it up, but the reflection will not be as harsh, and there fore easier to cancel out, or control.

I have a nephew that is an architecture photographer and if I remember right he said he doesn't use a flash at all.

I'll need to pick up a black backdrop for the darkening sheet.  I'm guessing that should work right?  Now what about photographing these under direct overhead fluorescents?

If you cannot provide the lighting, then use a color checking card in a shot to sort out those corrections later in post.
