Meaning of letters on camera

For example on my Nikon D7000.  What does the "D" mean?

Another example Sony A7R.  'A' I found out means "Alpha", but what about the "R".

Then Canon has 70D.  Again the 'D' comes up, but behind the number vs Nikon in front.

"D" --> "digital". No other magic.

The R on the Sony is just a model variance indicator. There are other (at least one) A7 models.
