Does a cameras shutter ever slow down over time?

Shutter is mechanical.  So does it ever slow down over time with enough shutter clicks?  I have no problems right now, but was wondering about this.  Actually the thought came from when I was talking to camera store rep about mirrorless cameras.  Their pitch was "the mirrorless will never have it's shutter wear out".

I dare you to wear your shutter out before the camera itself needs an upgrade. The store rep is there to sell you stuff and NOT inform you. You already have the D7000, use it and stop worrying......;)

Why so serious?

What a load of garbage. The sales weasel clearly didn't know what they were talking about. My guess is that there is greater margin on the mirrorless products, and some belief that it will be easier to make a sale at that price point.  Just a guess.

The moment the shutter misbehaves in any way is the moment service is required on your camera. There's not going to be any "slowing down". +1 on stop worrying about it.

I was going to say the same thing.  I have never heard of a shutter wearing out.  I'm sure sooner or later yes, that is possible. But that would be one long road.

I love the responses. Yeah that salesman is a hack. The sale of mirrorless cameras is not that great in the US, and it sounds like he was trying to boost them. The only time my shutter slows down is when I set it to drag for longer exposure time. Now a shutter may act up when it is about to die, but then it will most likely just give up the ghost all at once is the most likely.

Most DSLR's are are rated towards 400,000 photos or so.  That's a lot of photos.  I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think any speed decrease will every be 'noticeable'.  When the shutter goes, it will just GO and stop working.

Ha!  Just as I thought.  Sneaky sales man.  I'm glad I didn't buy from him and ended up ordering on Amazon

Well I thought something was off with him, the overwhelming responses here just confirmed.

Well your intuition was correct then, sounded off to me, but you just never know.  I think this thread summed that one up.
