Photo quality from a GoPro camera?

9 years 5 months ago #407362 by Noah J
I have job coming up where I need a super small camera and I was wondering how is the picture quality from one of these GoPro cameras?  I know the action peeps love these because of the video and how durable these are.  I need something that is water proof, shock proof and takes good photos.  Oh, and is small and easy to use.

I was reading on some of the other cameras on the market, a few few Chinese ones, a Sony, even a Polaroid one.  It seems the recommendations flow towards GoPro.  But they always seem to focus on the video, and not still images.

I'll be looking for something that I can control from my iPad or iPhone.

Thank you

-Noah

A while ago I saw an amazing photo taken from a gopro of wild horses jumping in a stampede.

I don't know the exact details of the quality but I know it can produce good results.

I have one of the first GoPro's and even that takes pretty good photos.  This one has to be at least 4 years old, so I'm sure the newer ones are even better.

Gopro will be your best bet, best small camera IMO

Personally I'd not buy one for stills. But I've also not researched it.

Quick research revealed:  thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-waterproof-camera/#gopro

(quote for those who don't want to follow the link):

Why not a GoPro?A GoPro won’t take still photos as well as a point-and-shoot, pure and simple. It has a fixed wide-angle lens that’ll make things look super small unless you’re right up against them. GoPro cameras are really built for wearable and/or hands-free video capabilities—they’re very small, very light, and easy to stick just about anywhere (if you’re looking for a GoPro recommendation, check out our guide to the  best action camera ).
For walking around and taking photos as you would with a normal camera, the GoPro can’t keep up with our rugged point-and-shoots. Definitely not in image quality, anyway. In fact, video quality is actually better on the Panasonic TG5 than even the latest and greatest GoPro, so if you don’t need that action-cam form-factor, then a rugged point-and-shoot is the better way to go.

I dunno mate, seems there's a few choices out there:

Gopro's claim to fame is being wearable or mountable on almost anything.  You want to get some footage clipped to your skateboard?  Gopro's for you.  You want some footage of your skydive from the viewpoint of your foot, gopro's for you.  Want to send a camera to the edge of space using a weather balloon? Then gopro's for you:

Even then, there's alternatives to gopro:

You want a camera which is waterproof/shockproof with good picture quality and the ability to zoom etc.  then there's a lot of other choices (see first link).
