What is your opinion on HDR photography?

This weekend I was reading up on HDR and how it's done.  I'm curious though, are there any areas in business where it's used?  I have seen some real estate photos that looked kind of like some of the HDR photos I have seen, but I don't know 100%.

There re many areas in photography that HDR is used. HDR is just a way to get more dynamic range in an image than the sensor/camera is able to get in one shot. Well at least proper HDR. Some of what people call doing HDR is actually bit mapping, or artificially creating different exposure levels. I have no problem it properly done HDR as it enhances a photo as opposed to cooking it. I have used HDR to get the shot, and do it by exposing for the light to the dark, and then combining the images, and tossing out the bad parts. IF HDR is done right you do not even know it has been done.

I see it done often with Realtors, but they always go over board and it looks fake

It's pretty common to use it for interiors.  When the photographer does not want to be bothered with lots of lights.

Remember this rhyme:
If you can tell it's HDR, then you've gone to far.

:agree:

Really, though, HDR is just a lot of dynamic range. I consider this one HDR even though it was a single shot:

I had lots of shadows that I wanted to bring out (being the worst part of the day) and still have the highlights visible.

I refer to overdone HDR as "overcooked", same as for too much saturation, etc. When used well it is a viable technique for dealing with difficult lighting situations. Such as interiors, as stated above.
