Client completely sandbagged me today!

{sigh}

{rant}

I drove just over half hour, was set up and ready 15 minutes early from our scheduled meetup time.  {waiting}{waiting}{waiting}

10min, 15min,25min,35min past!  41min I'm packing up my car and I get a text "Sorry, running late.  Can we reschedule this for tomorrow?" :blink: :evil:

Seriously?

I haven't even responded yet.  I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to say here.

Tell him you'll bill him for today, any push back, walk away from this "client"....Simple.

Why so serious?

Good advice, I would also add on the bill for mileage too!

Time for a change in policy: a deposit gets them onto the calendar. No other way for a commitment of your time.

Reschedule no less than 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, the deposit is forfeit and your time for another calendar entry will require an additional deposit. Because they are paying for your time.

Photos / prints / whatever are extra, after the fact.

And don't budge. That way, you show up, they don't, you still get paid for your time.

Oh, and charge extra for mileage over X miles. Whatever X is for you.

They are out there.  Tighten up your contract, send your invoice and move on.

Things do happen, but how they communicated with you was wrong and irresponsible.  I wouldn't spend much more time on this client.  Move onto something more productive.

Canon 5D Mark II, 30D, 40D, 50 1.2L, 16-35 2.8L Mark II, 24-105 4L IS, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L IS, 85 1.8, 4 x 580 EX(II)

This type situation should be dealt with in your contract. Couple of photographers I know in my area allow up to 15 min. (traffic delays are common here) then bill for any additional time and for a rescheduled session.

Decide what limits and guidelines and timeframes to establish and make it as clear as possible on your website and in your contracts. http://asmp.org has info. on contracts, or you might look up PPA for info.
