How to respond to people who compliment my photography?

9 years 5 months ago #408193 by Joe Peterson
I always seem to feel somewhat awkward when someone compliments my photos.  Like I'm not sure what to say.  Do you just say thank you or do you talk about the photo?

For me, my struggle is -

One side of me things thinks just say "thank you" they don't want to hear my life's story.

While the other side of me rationalizes that by saying just "thank you" comes across that I don't value your opinion and non appreciative.

Does anyone else feel this way?  Actually how do you respond when people compliment your work?

"Thanks" gets it done.....;)

Why so serious?

Yeah that is pretty much how it works for me as well. I say thank you I am glad you like the photo. And then if they want to talk more they generally do. I treat it as an adlib situation. Just go with the flow.

Same here, "thank you" always does the job.  If they want to know more, they will ask. I'll answer at that point

Canon 5d Mark II • Canon 24-105mm F/4.0 • Canon 135mm F/2.0 • Canon 50mm F/1.8 • Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 • Canon 580ex ii

Thanks? You guy's are making this to easy. Look them right in the eye and ask what they might know about it! That should put you in good standing, assuming you survive!

Sorry I'm not following you here.  You are asking the person "what they know about it"?   I might be interpreting you incorrectly, but doesn't that sound confrontational?

Joe, I think you're over thinking things.

Business card? Yeh, why not? I would.

OMG I love talking about my photos.  If compliment me, get ready for all sorts of gratitude and discussion if you want it.

I thank them and will answer any other questions they have.  Unless they ask for specifics, I generally won't go into details.
